Web of Knowledge - Q1 Upgrades - Scheduled Sunday 22nd April

Q1 upgrades are taking place this weekend on Sunday 22nd April. Users may be affected by short breaks in access from 1.00pm onwards, when saved histories/searches may be lost at that time. Users logged into EndNote Web may also be affected.

Nature Network

Expansion of social networking site from Nature.

Nature Network is an online meeting place designed to bring scientists from around the world together to discuss the latest scientific news and developments. Initially focused on the Boston area, the network has been relaunched to include other cities, starting with London.

Nature Network has an international outlook with a local focus giving you the opportunity to discuss issues of global interest but also identify local contacts to collaborate or develop ideas with, although the two local areas which have been developed so far are Boston and London anyone can join and get involved by blogging, posting to discussion forum, or making comments on articles.

Described as "Facebook for scientists" Nature Network connects at both a global and local level, enabling you to build your own public profile, create a network of friends and contacts, develop links and interact with people working in all areas of the scientific community.

Launch of PhysMath Central

From tomorrow (14th April 2007) the first journal from PhysMath Central will be open for submissions. PMC Physics A covers particle, high-energy & nuclear physics, gravity, cosmology & astroparticle physics.

The PhysMath Central publishing platform is operated by BioMed Central and committed to providing open access to peer-reviewed research in the fields of physics and mathematics. In the coming months PhysMed Central will be launching two further journal titles; PMC Physics B covering all aspects of atomic & molecular physics, optics, quantum physics, semiconductors & superconductivity and PMC Physics C which will cover soft matter physics, biological physics, complex systems, plasmas & fluids, classical and interdisciplinary physics, and statistical mechanics.

Publication in PMC Physics A will be free for submissions received by 30th June 2007

Information Skills Surgeries - new dates

Having trouble tracking down the right information? Finding that search engines aren't everything? Struggling to use Library e-resources off-campus?

Why not drop in on a Monday lunchtime between 12 and 1pm (*or some Tuesdays - see dates below) to the Wolfson Computer Suite on the first floor of the Harold Cohen Library. There you will find Library subject specialists in Science, Engineering, Medicine & Veterinary Science ready to help you with some hands-on searching.

Learn the ins and outs of the Library catalogue; Find your way around the Library Web pages; Expand your search beyond your reading list; Track down recent publications on your subject; Access electronic journals and get the full-text on screen. Whatever your question, we will do our best to help. No need to book, just turn up.

We have a trial of all World Scientific Press e-journals, but only the 2005 and 2006 issues for most titles, until 9th September. WSP publish 79 journals in the following fields:

TRIAL: Bentham Science Publishers e-journals (2006 and 2007 issues)

We have a trial of all Bentham Science Publishers' e-journals on Ingenta Connect, but only the 2006 and 2007 issues, until 23rd May in the first instance (though we have been promised two more two-month trials in total to take us up to September. Bentham publish 79 journals, mainly in the pharmaceuticals area. Note that we have recently started a subscription to Current Drug Safety.

Scopus Brainstorming: take part and get $150 Amazon.com Vouchers

The Scopus team would like to recruit up to 8 members of staff and research postgraduates to take part in a brainstorming session aimed at finding ways of improving Scopus so that it will better support researchers in their daily activities.

All participants should have some experience of using Scopus and will be rewarded with a choice between an Elsevier book voucher for €150, or a $150 Amazon.com© Gift Certificate* (US Currency).

The session will take place on 14:30 on the 18th April the Taylor Room in the Sydney Jones Library and will run for up to 2 hours.

Psychinfo - new interface

We've listened to your comments about Psychinfo being difficult to search and over the next few months we will trial some alternatives. You will still be able to access the Psychinfo database, just through a different and hopefully more friendly interface.

The first alternative we have for you to try is the Psychinfo (Ovid) .
