JISC / SURF Model License to Publish

JISC and SURF have produced a model license intended to "help authors make appropriate arrangements with publishers for the publication of a journal article."

The key features of the model license are (from the press release):

  • "copyright in the published work remains with the author;
  • the author grants the publisher a licence to publish the work;
  • the licence takes effect as soon as the publisher has indicated that it wishes to publish the work;
  • once the article has been published, the author can make it publicly accessible – in the form in which it was published by the publisher – by making it available as part of a digital scientific collection (a “repository”).
  • if the publisher so requests, the start of such public accessibility can be delayed for a maximum of six months".
Use of the License to Publish is supported by the Wellcome Trust who have recently issued a Position Statement in Support of Open and Unrestricted Access to Published Research.

For more information and to download a copy of the 'License to Publish' please go to the SURF Copyright Toolbox.

Royal Society e-journals - access back to 1665, and to all titles

We now subscribe to the Royal Society's complete package of journals. This means that in addition to our existing subscriptions to the Philosophical Transactions and Proceedings titles we get access to:

  • Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society
  • Biology Letters
  • Journal of the Royal Society Interface
  • Notes and Records of the Royal Society
By subscribing to the Royal Society's complete package we also get access to their journal archive, right back to the very first volumes published in 1665.

Our extended subscription officially starts in 2007, but the Royal Society have kindly granted us access for the remainder on 2006.

To access these journals go to the library catalogue. Because of the numerous title changes over the years, there are 30 catalogue records!

Science magazine - now available online back to 1880, plus STKE

We now have online access to Science magazine back to 1880, rather than just back to 1997, following our decision to purchase the online archive. At the same time we have agreed to extend our subscription to cover Science STKE - the Signal Transduction Knowledge Environment. These additional services officially start in 2007, but the publisher has granted us 'trial' access for the rest of 2006.

The catalogue record for Science has been updated accordingly, and a new one will soon be created for Science STKE.

Or just go to Science or Science STKE.

Build your own search engine

You can create a search engine that concentrates on a subject of your choice and that prioritises or restricts search results to websites and pages that you, or your friends and colleagues have specified.

Google Custom Search allows you build a search engine for a topic of your choice that either searches the entire web, prioritising results from web pages you or your colleagues have specified, or searches only those pages you have specified. Look at the examples of how this works.

Rollyo allows you to create a search engine that searches a web sites selected by you on a subject chosen by you. To see how this works look at Brian Greene's String Theory Search Engine.

Other examples include Swicki or Yahoo Search Builder.

These tools are free but will need to register to use them.

Academy of Management Journal, from 1958
Academy of Management Review, from 1976
Journal of Marketing Research, from 1964
Journal of Marketing, from 1936

Additional full text, non-journal content includes market research reports, industry reports, country reports, company profiles and SWOT analyses. The database is updated daily.

Access Business Source Premier from the Library's database pages or directly at http://search.ebscohost.com/. If you're accessing from off-campus login to Athens first. Search the database using the generic EBSCOhost platform, or the Business Searching Interface designed especially for it.
