SenseWeb data mapping project from Microsoft Research

MSR SenseWeb is “a research portal that lets users visualize and query real-time data using a geographical interface such as Windows Live Local and allows data owners to easily publish their live data using web service interfaces”.

Universities and individual researchers can publish their data to SensorWeb, as long as they accept the data publishers' agreement.

The SenseWeb FAQ’s give more information about the project and how to contribute.

Enhanced journal articles from the RSC

The RSC have announced that from February 2007 “RSC journal papers will be enhanced so that their data can be read, indexed and intelligently searched by machine, a first step towards the “semantic web.”

In practice, this means that readers of RSC journals who click on named compounds and scientific concepts in an article will be able to download structures, understand topics and to link through to electronic databases.

The RSC have called this intiative Project Prospect and you can find out more about it on the project web site.

The University of Liverpool has a subscription to all Royal Society of Chemistry journals so if you read these journals you should be able to benefit from this intiative.

Get the most out of ScienceDirect & Scopus - CANCELLED

The Library is hosting a training session on ScienceDirect and Scopus, presented by Christopher James of Elsevier.

The session is being held on Friday 9th February at 10.30 am in the Harold Cohen Library Seminar Room.

ScienceDirect was recently relaunched with a completely new look and improved fnctionality, and Scopus has steadily added new features since its original launch. Scopus has proved a real hit with researchers because of the intuitive way that it allows search results to be refined.

The session was originally aimed at Library staff but there are additional places now available. If you would like to attend please email Terry Bucknell.

UPDATE: THIS HAS HAD TO BE CANCELLED

New developments in Scopus

The Scopus database has enhanced some of the services it provides to make it more useful. They include:

  • More Pre-1966 Records : Scopus has begun an initiative to add millions of pre-1996 abstracts in chemistry, physics, mathematics and social sciences.
  • RSS Feeds : You can now setup an RSS feed with just one click.
  • HTML Feeds : HTML feeds allow you to convert your Scopus search result/RSS feed into an HTML version that can then be displayed on any website. Besides article title, a feed can now also display cited-by count, publication year, source title and the first 5 author names of the article. You can customis an HTML feed to share the look and feel of your page. All article titles in such an HTML feed are linked back to Scopus.
  • Exact Author Searching : This should help you refine an author search. Choose “show exact matches only” check box on the Author Search form, Author Selection and Author Lookup pages.

To find out more read the Scopus newsletter.
